was reported in the United States of America, the number increasing to 1,545 in 1933: the disease appeared in epidemic form in Greece, in 1927 (Livierato, 1932); it first appeared in Scotland in 1930 (Beattie, Smith and Tulloch, 1935) and many cases have been reported all over the British Isles and in other countries, at intervals during the past few years. There is evidence that the infection, though often latent, is widespread in its distribution and routine Widal examinations of sera from unclassified febrile cases in England show agglutination of Br. abortus to a significant titre in about 4 per cent of cases (Messer, 1934). The infection among bovines would seem in the British Isles to be even more widespread; thus Walker Hall (1933) reported the presence in milk of agglutinins to Br. abortus, in the Bristol district, as follows : (1) Raw churn milk, positive in 26 per cent, (2) pasteurized milk, 31 per cent, (3) graded milk, 44 per cent. The apparent anomaly of the rising percentage of positive findings in this series is probably due to the fact that while raw churn milk-samples

A Case of Identity Confirmation of Brucella abortus S99 by Phage Typing and PCR Methods

Brucellosis is a zoonotic infection that is associated with fever in humans and abortion in animals. The agent of this disease is a facultative intracellular gram-negative coccobacillus called Brucella. There are six classic species, including B. abortus, B. melitensis, B. suis, B. canis, B. neotomae, and B. ovis.  In recent years, four new species have been reported,...

A Case of Multi-Ulcerative Abscess Due to Brucella abortus in Kerman, South East of Iran

Cutaneous involvement is an unusual complication in brucellosis that has been reported to range between 0.4% and 17%. We here introduce a 40-year-old shepherd, who presented with two ulcerative abscesses in his lower left leg. Cultivation of the abscess aspirate was positive for Brucella abortus. The first titer of his serological test was 1/160, which subsequently rose to 1/640. In countries l...

Development of New Modified Simple Polymerase Chain Reaction and Real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction for the Identification of Iranian Brucella abortus Strains

Brucellosis is primarily a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species. The genus Brucella contains highly infectious species that are classified as biological threat agents. In this regard, the identification of Brucella can be a time-consuming and labor-intensive process posing a real risk of laboratory-acquired infection to the laboratory staff. This stud...

Molecular identification of Brucella species and biovars associated with animal and human infection in Iran

Brucellosis is a costly contagious disease of human, domestic and wild animals. It is a serious health problem in Iran causing significant economic losses therefore, control approaches to prevent its spread are of great importance. In Iran, the species and biovars of virulent Brucella species are still under-reported due to the inadequate diagnostic protocols and insufficient laborator...

The Assessment of Cytokine and Antibody Responses to Recombinant 31kDa Brucella Cell-Surface Protein in Brucella Abortus Infected Mouse Model

Background & Objective: One of the most common diseases between zoonosis - especially in developing countries – is brucellosis. Identification of Brucella cell antigen combinations in terms of the amount and type of immune response in infected hosts, are important in vaccine design. 31kDa Brucella cell surface protein (BCSP31) is shared among all Brucellae. We aimed to define specific immune r...
